Marine Science in Action
the 25th Discovery Day Open House
at Romberg Tiburon Center
Discovery Day is the Romberg Tiburon Center's annual open house, when we invite the public to visit our marine lab on the Bay and see marine science in action. Spend some time behind the scenes and be a marine scientist for the afternoon! Learn about the research we do to understand, restore and conserve the plants, animals and habitats of San Francisco Bay. Help collect evidence to answer questions about the Bay and the sea life that depends on it. See the answers emerge over the afternoon and on our web page afterwards. Watch the short film, "Racing with Copepods," featuring RTC scientists, local youth, and Sylvia Earle, and listen to scientists describe their research in just seven minutes in our Bay Science Cafe!
- How do we collect the microscopic life (plankton) of the Bay? Come try it for yourself and see!
- How does microscopic life in wetland soil help plants grow? Get your hands wet and help us find out!
- How does a crab's heart beat change with temperature? Come find out!
- How accurately can you measure the shell size of invasive green crabs? Help the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center track invasive green crabs and find out.
- How do kelp, crabs, worms and other Bay and coastal life feel in your hands? Touch them here!
- How fast does sound move in Bay waters? Measure it here!
- How does the drought affect the water quality in the Bay? Test some samples to find out.
Discover this and much more when you visit us for an afternoon full of marine science fun!
