Machines of Loving Grace

Since the 1960s computing design has largely fallen into AI and IA camps (artificial intelligence vs. intelligence amplification). Originally the AI community was best exemplified by John McCarthy and SAIL and the IA community was best expressed by Douglas Engelbart and his Augmentation Research Center. Since then the two communities of researchers have largely not spoken. What might a synthesis of these two philosophies look like?
