Explorables: Handmade Science

Join Explorables for three classic activities exploring color and light.

Chromatography
For centuries scientists and engineers have mixed pigments to create the vibrant colors in our built environments. Use Chromatography to discover which pigments make up your favorite color marker.

Spectroscopes
Not all lights are made the same but all are equally fascinating. Spectroscopes allow the curious observer to examine the colors present in a light. Is there a difference between the sun and lights in your home?

Light Boxes
The wondrous cousin of the kaleidoscope, the Light Box uses curved mirrors to create patterns of lights and colors from the environment for the maker's enjoyment. See how this toy changes your perspective on the world around you.

Use everyday materials to create models and other tools for exploring the world around us. Run by a highly skilled, dedicated team of volunteers, these drop-in workshops mix classic activities with open-ended investigations, encouraging participants to follow their hunches to aha moments of scientific insight.

All materials provided; take what you make.

Explorables has been offering science to go since 1990.
