Participate in Science at Mountain Lake: Citizen Science & Bioblitz at Mountain Lake
Join Rebecca Johnson as she explains the world of citizen science, including grassroots BioBlitzes. This talk will be part of a Nerds For Nature BioBlitz - you can help make scientific observations and collect data on local biodiversity!
Rebecca Johnson co-coordinates Citizen Science at the California Academy of Sciences. A marine biologist and invertebrate zoologist by training, Dr. Johnson works with volunteers to discover, document and monitor invertebrates and seaweeds in the intertidal habitats of central California, primarily along the Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo coasts. She is particularly interested in building a community of naturalists working together to discover nature in their backyards, local parks, sidewalk gardens, walk to school or work, in their everyday lives. She is spearheading a new Academy initiative to engage San Franciscans in discovering and documenting the City's biodiversity. She believes citizen science is an excellent way- not only- to involve the public directly in research, but also to build natural history skills, connect people to the natural world, help strengthen our sense of place and foster stewardship.
Rebecca has worked in the Invertebrate Zoology Department and educational programs at the California Academy of Sciences for almost 20 years. A native Californian, Dr. Johnson is proud to hold degrees from UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, and UC Santa Cruz.
Talks are held at the outdoor classroom (north end of the lake), approximately a 15 minute walk from the parking lot at 14th Avenue and Wedemeyer Street (Free Parking). Get Directions >>
