Postmodern Astronomy: The Vanishing Observer in the 21st Century

What does it mean to make an observation? How do astronomers' tools change the way they observe? Retired support astronomer Tony Misch considers these and other questions in his role as Director of the Historical Collections Project at Lick Observatory, where for more than 120 years, new observing technologies have constantly replaced older instruments. Misch will review the changing practice of observational astronomy today, inviting a reexamination of conventional notions of observing.

Before or after the talk, check out the temporary installation of artifacts on loan from the Lick Observatory Historical Collection.
