Wild Oakland Presents... the Geologic Heart of Knowland Park

Knowland Park presents a rare glimpse of Oakland's distinctive landscape without the human overlay. The natural habitats of the park are intimately connected to their geologic setting. This free walk will take us around the heart of the park as we study the shapes of the land, the rocks that crop out on it, and the geological features that underlie it (including the Hayward Fault and Chabot Fault). The wide views from Knowland Park's gentle hills will lead us to consideration of other topics of Oakland geology, Bay Area geology on the regional scale and California as a whole.

We'll meet at the Cameron Avenue entrance, a cul-de-sac off of Malcolm Avenue that dead-ends at the park. It's fine to park on the street or any of the other nearby 1-block cul-de-sacs that are on the south side of the park. Bring drinking water, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes!

There are no bathrooms or drinking water facilities at Knowland Park.
