Introduction to Maps, Compass Use, and Orienteering
Ever feel lost in the woods just looking at a map? Ever get dizzy trying to figure out a compass? No wonder – there's a LOT of information on maps; and, like any tool, a compass can be very frustrating if not understood. In this introductory class, attendees will learn the basic parts of any map, such as scale, legend, and contour lines. We will cover magnetic declination and how this affects navigation. The course will also unleash the power of the compass: starting from the basics, like how to hold it (yes, there is a special way!); to more advanced techniques like how to navigate a foreign landscape with this marvelous, yet simple tool.
Diony Gamoso (Presidio Biotech) and Steve Phillips (Biotech emeritus) are thrilled to have Laura Suur of the Parks Conservancy join the team of instructors. All tools and materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your favorite topographic map or compass, if you have either. There will be a field component with light hiking, so please dress appropriately.
