Birding by Sound, a Workshop with Alvaro Jaramillo
Alvaro is a well-respected Bay Area ornithologist and author who recently published the "American Birding Association Field Guide to Birds of California." He is also a wonderful teacher and guide who has taken birders on international trips to South America, Israel, and other great birding spots and also recently helped discover a new bird species in Chile. Alvaro got his birding start in Canada and started his Bay Area birding experience as a bird bander with SFBBO almost 20 years ago. His expertise and enthusiasm always make his workshops very popular.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to identify and differentiate bird songs and understand the ecology and behavior of bird vocalization. For example, Alvaro will cover topics on the development of song, song variations, and the purpose of song as well as how to visualize and learn bird sounds. This is not a workshop just for experts, but for any naturalist or birder interested in obtaining a richer understanding of bird voice. We will hold the field trip in the morning when bird song is most prevalent to introduce some differentiated songs and then we will cement some of these concepts after lunch in the classroom section.
Birding Level: Beginner and up.
Physical Requirements (for fieldtrip): Moderate, we may do some walking in grassy fields, and on sloped trails. We will seek to maximize the number of aural experiences for the day rather than the number of birds sighted. As singing behavior is at its height in the morning, this will be an early morning field trip. The field trip will likely be on the coast, where a mix of grassland, shrub-land and forest can be found and songbird diversity is high!
