Using Tactical Urbanism to Create Resilient Cities

Over the past decade, an international movement of artists, designers, advocacy groups, and progressive city governments has been reclaiming city streets by experimenting with new models of urban space, such as pop-up parks, guerilla gardening, and open streets initiatives. Such experiments-variously referred to as tactical urbanism, urban prototyping, or iterative placemaking-have begun to make cities more livable.
However, the placemaking movement has largely overlooked issues of climate change, increasing biodiversity, and the importance of natural systems as integral components of functioning cities. The Studio for Urban Projects aims to use the processes, permitting structures, and policies advanced by the tactical urbanist movement to address urban resiliency.
Join us for a lunchtime talk with two designers from the Studio for Urban Projects, during their residency at the Bay Observatory.
