Truth and Beauty in Astronomy Visualization
In the development of astronomy imagery for the public, thescientific emphasis on fidelity can often seem at cross-purposes to artistic expression. As an astrophysicist whocreates visualizations, Dr. Summers not only confronts thisdichotomy daily, but also delights in the challenge ofcombining accuracy and aesthetics. This talk will showcasecompelling visuals and describe techniques used in creatingsequences for educational materials, press releases, planetarium shows, and IMAX films. Come experience thetransformation of Hubble images and data into cinematicsequences, with an emphasis on the compromises made and theflourishes enabled when paying homage to the twin ideals oftruth and beauty.
