Gary Snyder - Poet, Essayist, Environmental Activist

Born in San Francisco in 1930, Gary Snyder is one of the iconic poets of the Beat Generation. He has published more than a dozen collections of poetry and prose of which Practice of the Wild is widely recognized as one of the most influential environmental books of the last fifty years. His recently completed poem, Mountains and Rivers Without End, is broadly recognized as one of the greatest long poems in American literature. His book Danger on Peaks, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Snyder’s extensive mountaineering, travel, and study of Buddhism have long influenced his perspectives and his art. Gary will talk about the connections between his life and nature and how his life’s work has been inspired by his deep connection to the natural world.
