Fungi and autoimmunity: Talk by Martin Laurence, Shipshaw Labs
Many strong links between fungi and diseases involving chronic inflammation have been found recently. This talk reviews the evidence linking fungal infections to Crohn’s disease, psoriasis, seronegative spondyloarthropathies (ex: reactive arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis) and multiple sclerosis. It focuses on multiple sclerosis, where the evidence is strongest. The hypothesis of genital exposure to an as yet unidentified fungus is proposed to explain why disease onset nearly always occurs after puberty.
