Island Conservation: Preventing Extinctions by Removing Invasive Species from Islands

Islands represent a unique opportunity for conservation. Compared to continents, islands have greater biodiversity, more threatened species, and higher levels of extinctions. One of the main threats to an island’s native inhabitants is introduced and invasive plants and animals. Removing these mammals, in particular, can be a critical intervention for saving native island species. Employing this key strategy, along with plenty of hard work, has led to remarkable rebounds of island biodiversity worldwide. Join Nick Holmes, of Island Conservation, headquartered here in Santa Cruz, to learn more about island restoration. Island Conservation is a not-for-profit conservation organization whose mission is to prevent extinctions by removing invasive species from islands.
