Across the Universe: Mapping the Cosmos Beyond the Milky Way

Our Sun is merely one of billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy, which itself is just one of a trillion galaxies in the Universe. A hundred years ago, we did not know of the whole Universe that lay outside of our Milky Way. Yet today, we are able to map out the intricate 'cosmic web' distribution of galaxies in full 3D out to almost the entire visible Univere. I will tell the story of how this came to be, during a unique period in history when the boundaries of the visible Universe seem to double every decade.
