Hard Earth Talk: Low-Hanging Fruit

Kay Sheils

Investments in businesses aimed at improving the environment have had mixed success. Solar power has taken decades to reach profitability, even with government subsidies. Algae fuels remain far from commercial viability. Ethanol has frittered away billions of dollars. But investors have neglected a whole host of sectors that can yield meaningful environmental change and quick financial returns. Among them: a new twist on the old business of wastewater treatment. An environmental-services investment banker spotlights some unnoticed ways to help the planet and the pocketbook.
