Living Plankton Exploration

Living in the water beneath the Exploratorium at Pier 15 is an ever-changing community of tiny plankton. Under a microscope, a plankton sample appears as a miniature world of intricate shapes and speeding swimmers. These tiny organisms form the base of the marine food web, and in San Francisco Bay, they provide food for baby fish, crustaceans, seabirds, and marine mammals. Learn about the critical role that plankton play in the world’s ocean by driving marine ecosystems and moderati.g climate.
Join Exploratorium biologist Jennifer Frazier for an exploration of microscopic life in the Bay.
