Conversations About Landscape: Heritage and Habitat: Shrimp Fishing in San Francisco Bay
Explore interwoven stories about the habitat and heritage of San Francisco Bay’s shrimp fisheries.
Artist Rene Yung will discuss the culture of Chinese shrimp-fishing villages that ringed San Francisco Bay in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Yung will share her artwork, Written on Water, which she describes as “a transdisciplinary meditation on the intersecting displacements of people and land around San Francisco Bay - the erasure of the historical Chinese immigrants’ shrimp fishery in the Bay, and the loss of Bay edge-lands where shrimping took place.â€
Then, marine biologist Kathy Hieb will present the biological story of the bay shrimp - Crangon franciscorum - discussing its unique life cycle, its distribution through the Bay, and the environmental conditions that affect its abundance.
Yung will also display an installation created through a San Francisco Arts Commission grant.
