Science Sunday: Mysteries of Davidson Seamount and Sur Ridge Revealed: Exploring ancient, deep-sea coral communities

Due to its spectacular abundance of marine life, Monterey Bay was designated as a National Marine Sanctuary in 1992. As technology developed to explore the deep, Davidson Seamount was added to the Sanctuary in 2008. Large, ancient, and beautiful organisms inhabit this unique formation. In 2015, Sur Ridge was determined to be a Sanctuary Ecologically Significant Area, due to its amazing deep-sea diversity. Now we not only have the capability to reach these depths, but to also revisit individual specimens through time, unlocking the secrets of animals living nearly 12,000 feet below the surface.
Join Andrew DeVogelaere to see the beauty, hear about ongoing research, and learn about new developments to protect and restore these extraordinary deep sea habitats.
