Aero Design Challenge

Offered annually since 2013, Aero Design Challenge explores the engineering design process with an aerospace-themed project and competition for Grades 5-12. Each program includes a series of foundational experiences in the Hiller Aviation Museum’s exhibit gallery and lab spaces, after which teams of 3-4 students work together to design, build, test and improve some kind of vehicle. This year’s design challenge focuses on vertical flight, with students tasked with building an unpowered helicopter capable of flying for as long as possible when dropped from height. Students use wind tunnels, flight simulators, remotely operated multirotor drones and real full-scale helicopters to investigate the science behind vertical flight before breaking into teams to build their own rotorcraft.
