Earthquake Mythbusters
Get an overview on earthquake hazards in the Bay Area, some cool science the lab is working on to help increase knowledge and safety, and bust some common myths about earthquakes and preparedness. Also find out the latest news about the status of Shake Alert, the earthquake early warning system now being rolled out on the West Coast. The ShakeAlert system is being developed with public and private partners, which include: the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the California Geological Survey, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Washington, the University of Oregon, the University of Nevada Reno and Central Washington University.Working with industry affiliates, legislators, and scientists on bringing an EEW system to the state of California, Dr. Strauss routinely interfaces with emergency managers to build action plans and strategies for hazard mitigation given a small lead time for earthquake warning.
