The book begins with Brown’s great-grandfather, Prussian immigrant August Schuckman, who crossed the Plains in 1852 and settled on a northern California ranch. Over a century later, Jerry Brown became the youngest governor in modern times - then returned three decades later as the oldest. Through the story of this political family, we will explore the history of California itself.
