Growing Treasure Island: From Geology to Horticulture
Learn what Treasure Island was planted on - and what was planted on Treasure Island for the Golden Gate International Exposition. Today, Treasure Island’s soil is being reinforced with fill from the Caldecott Tunnel’s fourth bore. Did you know that its perimeter was built in 1937 using boulders from the tunnel through Yerba Buena Island? Learn about the geology and construction factors that shaped the island’s creation. Then turn to the plantings on the island, the palm trees that lined the streets and the explosion of floral design throughout the many fair courts, created by contractors like the California Nursery Company.
Speaker: Joyce Blueford, Math/Science Nucleus
These ongoing talks on the past, present and future of Treasure Island cover topics including Treasure and Yerba Buena Island history, San Francisco world’s fairs, naval history, current island activities and redevelopment, island sustainability, the Golden Gate International Exposition, and art and architecture on Treasure Island.
