NASA Artemis 1 Splashdown Event
As NASA’s Artemis 1 mission comes to a thrilling end, you’re invited to watch the uncrewed Orion space capsule splashdown live in Chabot’s theatre. Then, learn more about the landing by exploring NASA Ames Visitor Center, learning more from a NASA expert and practice landing your own capsule in a special hands-on workshop.Â
9-10:30 a.m. Orion Splashdown Watch Party
As part of NASA’s Artemis 1 mission, Orion ends its 25-day journey by splashing down off the coast of San Diego at 9:40 a.m. Join other excited space fans to witness this historic moment on Chabot’s giant 60-foot diameter screen.
11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Capsule Landing Workshop
Come build your own capsule and practice landing it safely! In this workshop, young engineers will be briefed on the challenges of landing space capsules. Then, they will take on the task of designing a capsule, testing it, and testing again, to see if it can successfully tackle the challenge!
About Artemis 1
Following a successful launch on NASA’s Space Launch System rocket, Artemis I is testing the Orion spacecraft on a rigorous mission in the extreme environment of deep space around the Moon before flying astronauts on Artemis II in 2024. Artemis includes a series of increasingly complex missions that will enable human exploration at the Moon where the agency will prepare for future missions with crew to Mars.Â
With Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon, using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before. NASA will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first long-term presence on the Moon. Then, NASA will use what they learn on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap: sending the first astronauts to Mars.
