Marine Mammals & the Physiology Project: An overview and update on the animals and science at Long Marine Laboratory

The Marine Mammal Physiology Project is currently home to two Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, three Southern sea otters, and one endangered Hawaiian monk seal. Each of these animals works with staff and researchers, under the direction of Dr. Terrie Williams, to complete cutting edge physiological research. Current projects focus on investigating the energetics involved with various activities such as resting, diving, swimming, and vocalizing. Beau Richter, Head Trainer for the Marine Mammal Physiology Project at UC Santa Cruz, will discuss what these projects are designed to investigate, how the animals are trained to participate, what has been learned, and plans for the future. The ultimate goal with this research is to convert the knowledge gained into conservation of wild populations around the world.
