Nightlife at the Farallones
Celebrate the Farallon Islands – an isolated gathering spot for sharks, birds, and seals just 28 miles off the coast of San Francisco – with a brand new short film called Sanctuary in the Sea: A Gulf of the Farallones Experience; a new Academy exhibit module about the fragile islands; and live music by Mermen, the "psychedelic surf rock masters" of Northern California who did the soundtrack for the film.
Sanctuary in the Sea: A Gulf of the Farallones Experience, features stunning footage of the crown jewel of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, the Farallon Islands. The islands, 28 miles from San Francisco, are a gathering spot for whales, seabirds, sea lions and sharks. This extraordinary, 15-minute film, featuring new music by local favorites - the Mermen, highlights one man's amazing experiences as an urchin diver and follows his journey as he considers his profession, conservation, the future and the beauty, diversity and history of the Farallones.
A special NightLife screening of the movie will be accompanied by a discussion with filmmaker Bob Talbott and narrator and diver Ron Elliot. Seating is limited, passes for this talk we be available on a first-come, first-served basis on the night of the show.
The film we be screened continuously after the talk for the remainder of the evening (no passes required for these re-screenings.)
