Forecasting Volcanic Eruptions in Alaska

Although Alaska is known as land of beauty and contrasts -- from the icy northern slopes of the Brooks Range to the volcanic archipelago of the Aleutian islands -- its picturesque landscape is dotted by active volcanoes, often erupting violently to create hazardous conditions for local populations and international air traffic.

USGS scientists, collaborating other scientists at the Alaska Volcano Observatory, are working to understand the behavior of Alaskan volcanoes in order to reduce the impact of future eruptions.

Please join us to hear the stories of two recent spectacular eruptions that highlight the challenges of doing real-time science in remote environments.
