Art, Science & Visual Metaphors

What is the connection between art, science, and visual metaphors? Susanne Langer, one of my favorite art philosophers, stated, “art is the creation of forms symbolic of human feeling.” According to the Science Council, science is “the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systemic methodology based on evidence.” Metaphorical understanding involves comprehending concepts that our senses cannot access through tangible ideas we can perceive. The connections among these three concepts will be examined in this year’s Art & Science Presentation. After the presentation, please join us for refreshments in the Theatre lobby. If weather permits, we’ll complete the evening by setting up telescopes for stargazing outside in front of the Theatre, courtesy of the San Mateo County Astronomical Society and CSM’s Astronomy department.
