Our Marvelous Magnetic Moon

Megan Seritan

From lunar samples returned by the Apollo missions in the 1960s and 1970s to measurements taken from satellites orbiting the Moon in the present day, we've learned that the Moon used to have a global magnetic field just like the Earth does today. At some point, this global field disappeared. When and why did it vanish, and what traces did it leave behind on the lunar surface for us to find? This talk will discuss our knowledge of the Moon's magnetic history, how we've arrived at it, and what's next on our journey of discovery.
