Keeping the Lights On When Cyberattacks Go Physical

Critical infrastructure has become a domain of conflict between nation-states. Before a single shot is fired on a battlefield, an adversary can seek advantage by disrupting the systems a nation relies on to function: the rail lines and ports that move troops and supplies, the water systems that sustain our cities, the power grid that enables modern life.
In this talk, Dr. Nate Gleason, Program Leader for the Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, explores why the old strategy of building a strong perimeter and hoping to keep adversaries out is no longer enough. Sophisticated attackers will eventually find a way in, so Gleason and his team are developing what they call immune infrastructure: a layered approach that combines protection, detection, response, and resilience to prevent a cyber intrusion from becoming a physical consequence.
Gleason will discuss the technologies being built to keep essential systems running through an attack, and how artificial intelligence is reshaping both sides of this escalating competition.
