Healthy Kids, Healthy Lives: Adolescent Brain Development: Understanding Unique Opportunities for Early-Intervention & Prevention
Healthy Kids, Healthy Lives: Adolescent Brain Development: Understanding Unique Opportunities for Early-Intervention & Prevention
Adolescence is an exciting period of maturation that combines biological, behavioral and social changes, and brings with it an increased vulnerability in children. Families can use this window of opportunity to support their child's brain development, adjust the parent/child relationship and deepen family bonds. For some this may also include responding to behavioral and/or emotional changes in children, such as risk-taking, depression or changes in eating patterns.
In this presentation, Dr. Ron E. Dahl will describe how exciting advances in knowledge about adolescent brain development is providing unique insights to understanding the vulnerabilities that arise during adolescence.
The presentation will provide current updates on the science as well as practical information, guidance and tips for families. In addition, it will cover both research and policy implications of this work.
Ron E. Dahl is a pediatrician with long-standing research interests in the development of regulatory systems (e.g. sleep/arousal and affect regulation) and their relevance to the development of behavioral and emotional disorders in children and adolescents. His current work focuses on early adolescence and pubertal maturation as a developmental period with unique opportunities for early intervention and prevention in relation to a wide range of behavioral and emotional health problems.
