'Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making us Sick?'

Unnatural Causes is the acclaimed documentary series broadcast by PBS and now used by thousands of organizations around the country to tackle the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial inequities in health. The series crisscrosses the nation uncovering startling new findings that suggest there is much more to our health than bad habits, health care, or unlucky genes. The social circumstances in which we are born, live, and work can actually get under our skin and disrupt our physiology as much as germs and viruses.

We will be watching an episode that focuses on what happens in a Native American community when its river water is diverted to wealthier communities upstream. Afterwards, we'll hear from local organizations and agencies that are addressing issues of health inequities.

Panelists will include: Megan Wall, SF Department of Public Health; Alicia Harris, Breast Cancer Action; Sraddha Mehta, SF Department of the Environment; Tracey Patterson, Southeast Food Access (SEFA) Working Group. Light refreshments will be provided. RSVP by email.
