Red: Explore the color of passion and pageantry
Explore the color of passion and pageantry through special presentations, classic exhibits, and a fiery flamenco performance by San Francisco's Theatre Flamenco.
Tonight's program features a demonstration of cochineal dyeing techniques by renowned Oaxacan artists Elena Gonzalez Ruiz, Fidel Cruz, and Maria Luisa Mendoza. (Since first encountered by Spanish conquistadors, this Aztec pigment reigned for centuries as the most sought-after red in Europe and beyond-until the advent of synthetic dyes caused it to fade from the public eye.) From making dye and spinning wool to dyeing and weaving the yarn into rugs, they'll reveal how an unassuming insect leads to elegant crimson textiles.
In addition, Alex Warren, artist and founder of Sinopia Pigments and Materials, shares secrets to making paints from scratch. Exploratorium astronomer Dr. Isabel Hawkins and Maya Elder Maria Avila Vera and family offer insights on the significance of scarlet in Maya cosmology. And the beloved classic film The Red Balloon (1956, 34 min.), by Albert Lamorisse, screens in the McBean Theater.
This After Dark event is presented as part of ColorFest, a two-month extravaganza featuring over 30 color-related exhibits, film programs, adult seminars, performances, and hands-on activities. For more information, visit our online events calendar.
