The History and Possible Futures of the Internet

Larry Smarr

A look back at key moments in the exponential development of the Internet and World Wide Web demonstrates the power of Federal funding of universities to drive radical societal change. Even today, when entrepreneurs are creating wave after wave of new companies, one can glimpse possible futures of Internet-enabled applications in current university research. I will give examples of these trends in augmented reality, remote telepresence, and the quantified self.
