Audiophiles in the digital age – A dying breed of keepers of the flame?

Like most artists, musicians and voice artists have a particular concept for the sound and message they produce.  As a result, there are literally hundreds of different microphones on the market with different sound attributes and tones, which makes selection of the right tool to realize their concept a challenge.  This is hampered in the digital age with multiple sampling rates, compression ratios, encoding formats, and an almost 1000x range in ASP for playback devices & speakers.  The presentation will overview and demonstrate different microphone technologies that are used for various recoding applications, how to interface them to modern and mobile recording tools (studio to mobile phone) and realistic expectations of the results for music, video sound, podcasts, and communication markets.
