Cost-effective implementation of carbon capture systems

Valerie Karplus

To be successful in reducing CO2 emissions, carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) must be implemented in industrial and power sector contexts with diverse site operations and incentive structures. Drawing on the case of SO2 control for coal-fired power plants, which is recognized as one of the most successful efforts to improve air quality in the United States, this talk will consider what we can learn from past experience to inform cost-effective deployment of CCS at scale. Insights will be applied to assess the plausibility of assumptions and outcomes in technoeconomic assessments of CCS.
