Consequences of Current Population Trends

The world's population has passed the 7 billion mark and is still growing.    Why should humanists care?  Will we, or have we already, surpassed the carrying capacity of the earth?  Will poverty and disease increase in the developing world?  What will be the consequences of population aging and stabilization in the industrialized countries; Is continued population growth a benefit or liability? These and other issues will be discussed by Tom Hall, MD, DrPH (International Health), of UCSF's Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Trained at Harvard and Johns Hopkins, Tom was on the faculty of four schools of public health prior to joining UCSF. At North Carolina he was a director of one of the nation's largest university-based population studies centers. Non-academic positions have included medical director of a rural hospital, director of a health planning agency, and Chief Medical Officer (Research) in New Zealand. He joined UCSF in 1988, directed a postdoctoral HIV research training program and teaches global health. He has consulted with the World Health Organization, the World Bank, USAID and many countries on health workforce planning.
