Sound Off! An Audio Exploration

Carry the One Radio, the science podcast, is hosting a live show at UCSF.

Details and tickets here: soundoff.eventbrite.com

This is a free event to the public, but space is limited. Reserve your seat above. Easily accessable by public transit (1.5 blocks from the T Muni line).

Doors open at 6:30 PM - Late-night show style interviews with our host Kirsten (Dr. Kiki) Sanford (This Week in Science) featuring Bay Area scientists:

1) Dr. Frederic Theunissen on Communication Sound Processing:

You can tell a lot about a person from the way their voice sounds: male or female, rested or tired, young or old. Dr. Frederic Theunissen at UC-Berkeley studies how animals extract information from communication calls.

2) Dr. John Houde on the Role of Auditory Feedback in Speech:

Even when you're speaking a word, your brain is listening in to make sure that word sounds correct. Dr. John Houde at the UCSF Speech Neuroscience Lab studies this process by observing the brain's response to unexpected changes in auditory feedback.

3) Erin Brandt on Love Songs From a Spider:

While we use our ears and eyes to observe our surroundings, a whole world of secret communication reveals itself when we start exploring other ways to send messages. Erin Brandt from the Elias lab at UC-Berkeley studies the ways that jumping spiders compose routines of visual dance and vibratory song to woo the ladies.
