An Intimate Look at San Francisco Bay Marine Life

explO bay dayHave you ever wondered what kinds of creatures are living in San Francisco Bay? Join us for demonstrations and conversations with researchers, exhibit developers, and others who are exploring San Francisco Bay ecosystems. We’ll learn about the science, art, and politics of preserving the marine species both native and invasive that have found a niche in the Bay. And we’ll how restoring underwater habits can help protect us from future sea level rise.

Bay Day at the Exploratorium

Exploratorium exhibit developer Denise King will present a behind-the-scenes look at two exhibits that feature live invertebrates from the Bay including native oysters and other species that settle on hard surfaces.

Romberg Tiburon Center biologist Sarah Cohen will talk about her research and observations on the fish and colonial invertebrates in the Bay, their genetics and physiology, and how they’re impacted by human activities.

And David Lewis, executive director at Save the Bay, will discuss some of the biggest threats facing our Bay, including population growth, climate change, and pollution and how local residents are working together to create a more sustainable future.

About the Speakers

Sarah Cohen is an educator and marine biologist at San Francisco State University’s Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies. She studies the behavior, ecology, and physical environment of marine organisms in San Francisco Bay.

Denise King has been an exhibit developer at the Exploratorium since 2001. A keen observer of the natural world, she has studied subjects ranging from botany and ecology to marine biology, microbiology, and evolution.

David Lewis leads Save The Bay in working with public officials, business leaders, and key stakeholders to improve the health of San Francisco Bay, including the recent campaign that secured $500 million for Bay restoration through Measure AA.

This program is part of the inaugural Bay Day, a regional community celebration of San Francisco Bay organized by Save the Bay, featuring dozens of events that connect us with this valuable natural resource and the movement to sustain it for the future.
