Challenges and Opportunities in the Global Fight Against Emerging Infectious Diseases

New, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, such as pandemic viruses and resistant bacteria, pose a serious public health challenge. A concerted effort of experts from multiple disciplinesâ€"microbiologists, immunologists, clinical diagnosticians and epidemiologistsâ€"can address this problem by researching the mechanism of disease process (pathogenesis), discovering therapeutics and devising plans to mitigate and monitor the spread of disease. Clinical researchers can also help by conducting the clinical trials necessary to assess the safety and efficacy of new therapeutic and diagnostic tools.

At this event, research epidemiologist and educator Yvette Girard shares her insights on combating the global threat of infectious diseases. Dr. Girard received her M.P.H. in microbial disease epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health and her doctorate in experimental pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Before developing her career as an instructor, Girard received training in infectious disease epidemiology in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC Berkeley and at the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center.
