Good Fire Day: Learning About the Role of Fire and Management in Ecosystems - POSTPONED

The National Parks Service, Green Gulch  Zen Center, Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Central Coast Fire Council and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy invite you to participate in an event addressing the cultural fire history of the area and the roles fire plays in our ecosystems. Come and learn about fire management policies and practices, and see a controlled fire demonstration at Muir Beach!

During the day we will learn about fire history, and fire management options around the bay area. There will be speakers along with informational booths. In the afternoon, there will be an educational demonstration of a controlled burn. During this burn demonstration, fire experts will teach us about the different components of fire fuels, fire physics and heat transfer.  Members from the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department will also exhibit fire control practices as they put out the fire.

Fire has always been a valuable resource throughout the Bay Area. Historically, burning by the Native Americans as well as a combination of burning and grazing by the Euro American settlers has helped shaped the grasslands and forests throughout Marin County. Awareness aware of both the historical and current uses of fire, along with the negative and positive impacts of fire in this region is important. By understanding the diverse role of fire in this region, fire managers can implement suitable fire management policies and practices, which will allow us to better manage our natural resources and protect communities, both human and ecological.
