NightLife - Ocean Voices

Nightlife

In honor of World Ocean’s Day and the 100th Anniversary of Jacques Cousteau’s birth, the Academy is proud to host the debut performance of Ocean Voices, a collaboration between Academy scientist Wallace J. Nichols and sound artist Halsey Burgund in our all-digital planetarium dome.  This unique program features stunning visuals scored with a live musical performance on cello, violin, guitar, and keyboards by Halsey and his group Aesthetic Evidence.  The Ocean Voices project aims to open minds and expand awareness about the world's oceans by recording narratives from around the world and weaving them into a collective musical work. Fabien Cousteau and Céline Cousteau — Jacques Cousteau’s grandchildren, will speak before each performance about the importance of ocean conservation.

There will be two showings of Ocean Voices, at 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm.  Seating for each showing is limited; show-passes are available on the night of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.  During each performance, the music from Ocean Voices will also be broadcast in the Aquarium.

The Crucible will also be on hand to delight and instruct with a community art project honoring World Ocean’s Day, including a live demonstrations of industrial arts, including innovative and imaginative fire performances, and sculptures.  Proceed through a series of stations where you will help cast, paint, finish, and illuminate a collaborative work of art.  The final result will be displayed at NightLife on June 10th.  They will also demonstrate their expertise in Blacksmithing, Arc Welding, Oxy-acetylene torch cutting,  and Glass Flame-working.

Art.if.acts will unveil an art installation located throughout the Academy displaying the impact of plastic on our oceans since the birth of renowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.

Acclaimed San Francisco DJs Aaron Axelsen (Live105, Popscene) and Omar (Popscene) will provide music in the East Pavilion and Aquarium, respectively.
