Science@Cal Lecture: What's happening to the Earth's Magnetic field?

Many of the planets in the solar system have internally generated magnetic fields that protect them from the dangerous solar wind. Geological records suggest that the field can suddenly drop in strength, which can leave life on Earth unprotected. In this presentation, Prof. Bruce Buffett will discuss planetary magnetic fields and the current decline in Earth's field.

Bruce Buffett is a Professor of Geophysics in the Department of Earth & Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

The Science@Cal Lectures are a series of free public science talks given by UC Berkeley researchers aimed at general audiences.
