Application Driven Network Transformations
Traffic patterns have drastically changed over the past 20 years. Technology advances in the consumer market such as the iPhone, YouTube, and cloud computing have put new requirements and demands on the transport network. These new requirements along with advances in packet-based transport and optics have led to a transformation of the transport network. This lecture will examine how applications and consumer technology have impacted the traffic patterns in the network and how those changing traffic patterns have forced changes in the transport network. In addition, the lecture will look at how the network has evolved from transporting predominately voice traffic to packet based services and how new transport technologies are being leveraged to meet these new demands.
