The role of demand response in renewables integration
This talk addresses the challenge of integrating variable and uncertain renewable electricity sources into the grid, and focuses on what demand-side resources and energy storage can do to address these challenges. After discussing some of the technical barriers to grid integration of renewables, I will talk generally about several ways that electricity loads might be engaged in power system services and advantages and disadvantages to each. Then I will give an overview of a few research projects in my group, including "fast" demand response using thermostats and external load switches, and methods to sense and control demand side resources in communication constrained environments.
