Moonwalking With Einstein

Conversations at the Herbst: Joshua Foer In Conversation With Douglas McGray

Science journalist Joshua Foer became the United State Memory Champion in 2007, after researching how others use memory devices competitively. His forthcoming first book is based on that experience, and called Moonwalking with Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything. Pre-publication, Paramount Pictures purchased the rights to adapt the book for film. Foer is also the co-founder of Atlas Obscura, a website dedicated to places that are off the beaten path and appeal to the senses of wonder and curiosity. Recently, he spearheaded a modern design competition called Sukkah City, based on the temporary huts built during the weeklong Jewish festival of Sukkot. The installation art created for the competition will be documented in a forthcoming book, Sukkah City: Radically Temporary Architecture for the Next 3000 Years. Foer has written the column "A Minor History Of" for the quarterly journal Cabinet since 2007. He is also a contributor to Slate, The New York Times, Esquire, and the online blog BoingBoing.
