Do Galaxies Breathe, Too?

Galaxies are more than just hundreds of billions of stars; the gas that fills the space between the stars plays a crucial role in determining the fate of a galaxy. In this presentation, Dr. Du will discuss how we use spectra to study the physical properties of gas in distant galaxies, with a specific focus on how galactic-scale outflows and inflows impact the formation of stars. By studying how galaxies “breathe” (in a similar way to human respiration), we can put together a more comprehensive picture of galaxy evolution over cosmic time.
