Improving Health Behaviors with Tailored Email and Web

Chronic diseases are the major causes of illness and death in the United States, and account for almost 75% of the dollars spent on health care. CDC calls poor diet and physical inactivity two of the top three causes of chronic disease. We can't afford the growing burden of chronic disease, but we also can't afford one-on-one or even small group counseling for behavior change. We need cost-effective interventions that can promote dietary and physical activity behavior change on a mass population basis in a variety of institutional settings. The Alive! program is based on behavior change principles including individual tailoring, goal-setting and interaction. It has been proven effective at changing behaviors, in a randomized controlled trial.
