More than 50 years after the Clean Air Act, Americans breathe far cleaner air, yet people of color and overburdened communities still breathe more pollution than everyone else. Why does unequal air persist while overall air quality improves? Drawing on recent results from hyperlocal field measurements and model simulations, I will present evidence on key drivers of air pollution disparities. With a view towards identifying solutions, we’ll explore how targeted, place-based interventions could prove decisive in providing cleaner, more equitable air for all.
