The San Andreas Fault - Lovestream
Learn about the San Andreas fault and its neighbors in the Pacific-North American Plate Boundary, across the Bay Area and Northern California.
The San Francisco Bay Area sits within the boundary of two great plates, the North American and Pacific, and is one of the most highly faulted regions of the country. The recent occurrence of several closely timed large magnitude and damaging earthquakes around the planet (Venezuela, Colombia, Indonesia, Japan) has sparked renewed interest and concern about the potential occurrence of earthquakes in the Bay Area. The talk will summarize recent studies of what has been learned about the behavior of both individual faults like the San Andreas, and the overall fault system, in space and time. The calculated probabilities of damaging Bay Area earthquakes in the coming decades will be discussed.
Presented by David P. Schwartz, earthquake geologist/paleoseismologist Emeritus, Earthquake Science Center, USGS, Moffett Field, CA.
