Sustainable Architecture Tour: The EcoCenter at Heron's Head

Heron's Head EcoCenter

Tour San Francisco's first 100% "off-grid" building and discover how the promotion of environmental justice is reshaping the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood.

Opened in April 2010, the EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park is an inspiring environmental education beacon in the changing southeast San Francisco industrial zone. Nearly every feature of this 1,500-square-foot facility is used to educate the public about the neighborhood's toxic history and legacy of green renewal. The center features an off-grid solar array; an on-site blackwater wastewater treatment system; 15K gallons of rainwater storage; a vegetative roof; and an array of sustainable landscape and land management solutions.

The EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park is a project of Literacy for Environmental Justice (LEJ), which champions the right of all people to have safe energy, healthy food, clean air and water, open space, nontoxic communities, and equitable educational and employment opportunities. LEJ offers free urban environmental education programs and youth employment for neighborhood youth to gain experience in environmental health, conservation, restoration, and horticulture.

Join LEJ in exploring ways to continue growing the EcoCenter as a community-owned space and green hub for the southeast San Francisco as we explore this landmark sustainable learning environment at the Bay's edge. Learn more about the EcoCenter at lejyouth.org….
